GOUTER ECOSSAIS A LABEUVRIERE
The children at Labeuvrire school worked very hard to prepare for our Scottish afternoon.
In the weeks leading up to this, the CM1 and CM2 class learned 2 different traditional Scottish dances, « the gay gordans » and « strip the willow ». We learned these in stages and practiced with traditional Scottish music. The children found it hilarious when I explained that the men always wear kilts at celebrations such as weddings, parties, or ceilidhs.
Every class also prepared different Scottish cakes and treats. As these recipes were in English, we worked together to understand the instructions and pieces of vocabulary for the ingredients. The children in the maternelle class made shortbread, the CP and CE1 made fruit scones. The CE2 class made some oat based biscuits. However, by far the favourite was the CM1/CM2 class’s « Dundee cake ». We discovered that this cake comes from the city of « Dundee », famous for its marmalade, also found in this sweet treat!
The celebration included a continuous slideshow of pictures of the beautiful Scottish highlands, castles and main attractions. The children also had the great surprise of meeting a « piper »! He brought his Scottish bagpipes, playing famous songs from my home. He even let some of the children try and play the instrument, proving you must have a really strong set of lungs to even make a sound! To finish the evening the CM classes presented their Scottish country dances and sang the English Christmas songs that we had been working on.
Overall, the show was a huge success, bringing a bit of my home to life in Labeuvrire.
ANIMALS
J’étais chargé d’apprendre aux élèves de CM2 les noms d’animaux. La maîtresse m’a donnée une douzaine de flash cards, chaque avec l’image d’un animal, et elle a permis à moi de créer une activité moi-même. J’ai pris les élèves par 6 à 8 pour l’activité. Premièrement, j’ai montré chaque flash card aux élèves en nomment l’animal. La plupart des élèves connaissaient déjà le nom d’un ou deux animaux, comme « cat, » mais la plupart des mots étaient nouveaux. Après j’ai vu que chaque élève pouvait nommer la plupart des animaux, nous avons commencé un jeu. Un par un, chaque élève s’est mis devant le group avec moi. J’ai montré en secret une carte à cet élève. Il a dû mimer l’animal sur la carte, et le group a dû deviner le nom d’animal en anglais. J’ai trouvé que c’était une activité très efficace et ludique pour les élèves. Ils étaient intéressés pendant toute l’activité, et ils devaient associer le mot en anglais avec le concept de l’animal et pas seulement avec la carte. Quelques semaines après cette activité, j’ai joué un bingo utilisant les noms d’animaux avec les mêmes élèves de CM2, et ils ont bien retenu les mots. Il m’a fait plaisir de voir qu’une activité que j’ai proposé était si efficace et amusante!
CE2 Ski Trip
On 17th Janurary the CE2 class from Labeuvriere left for a week skiing in Lamoura in the Jura mountains. Out of 24 children, only 5 children had skied before therefore they were mostly about to ski for the first time. After a long journey, we arrived in the mountains to lots of snow, which was a relief after having such a warm winter!
Not only did we ski in the week, we also went on a racket walk through the forest whilst learning about the animals in surroundings. On the Friday we had a cross-country ‘ski de fond’ session.
My purpose on the ski trip was to speak to the children in English; to wake them up, at the dinner table, whilst getting ready etc. We also filmed an english video of the children in their ski gear, telling the camera each item of clothing in English.
Petit Déjeuner/Goûter Anglais
Vendredi le 11 décembre, à l’école Jean Vincent, les enfants de Labeuvrière du MS jusqu’au CM2 ont eu la chance de goûter des gâteux anglais comme des scones et des muffins (que les enfants on cuit eux-mêmes), des biscuits et du thé qui sont consommées partout en Angleterre. Ils ont aussi vu un petit déjeuner anglais, un ‘Full English Breakfast’, mais il n’y avait pas assez pour tout le monde à gouter !
La salle a été décorée avec des drapeaux anglais et le Maire de Labeuvrière est venu pour joindre les enfants au gouter. Le matin était un grand succès.

Hello!
My name is Rosanna Sweet, but everyone calls me Rosie. I am 20 years old and I come from Ipswich, Suffolk in the UK. Ipswich is a town in the east of England, around an hour and a half away from London. The county (region) of Suffolk is known for its farming so there is lots of beautiful countryside. I also live close to the coast so I often have days out at the beach.
I am studying French at Leeds University, so during term time I live in the city of Leeds which is in Yorkshire. Next year I will live in Leeds for my final year of university.
This year I am working at a primary school in Labeuvrière and I live 30 minutes away in Béthune.
My hobbies include cooking, skiing and travelling.
